“Adoption creates a bond of love.”

These words are at the core of my life, and also became the title for my story in the December issue of Story Monsters Ink. November was National Adoption Month and throughout the month my heart was filled with joy meeting other adoptees and adoptive families on social media, and hearing their stories.

For those who are considering adoption, or who are part of an adoptive family, I hope you enjoy my story of family.

An excerpt from the article Adoption Creates a Bond of Love: “My earliest childhood memory is of the day our parents told us we were adopted. I was about two years old, and I sat on one of the twin beds in the room my sister, Blanche, and I shared asking, “Adopted? What does that mean?”

“It means we’re not really theirs,” Blanche replied. “Someone gave us away, and our parents found us. They chose us from all the other babies and took us home, but we don’t really belong to them.”
“Oh,” I said and continued as if nothing had changed. I was too young to understand what my sister meant. Years later, I strongly disagree with her.

Today when I read news reports or hear broadcasters refer to a child as the “adopted son or daughter” of so-and-so, I cringe. Once a child is adopted, he or she becomes part of a family. No qualifiers are needed.
An unknown parent wrote, “Not of my flesh, nor of my bone, but still miraculously my own. Never forget for a single minute, you didn’t grow under my heart, but in it.” I may not have blood ties to Ruth and Harry, but we share a bond of love. Our hearts will forever be entwined.”
